The Colorful Backbone of Aquascaping: Rotala rotundifolia
Introduce dynamic movement and spectacular color transitions to your planted tank with the authentic Dwarf Rotala (Rotala rotundifolia). Native to the vibrant tropical wetlands and rice paddies across Southeast Asia, this classic Lythraceae family perennial is an absolute staple in both low-tech and high-tech aquariums. It forms thick, multi-branched vertical forests that operate as the perfect biological backdrop, providing immediate depth and shelter for freshwater fish and shrimp.
Fascinating Shape-Shifting & Color Transitions
The true magic of Rotala rotundifolia lies in its shape-shifting adaptation. Our specimen is grown emersed (above water) inside specialized air-ventilated starter pots, ensuring robust root health and disease-free tissue. In this stage, it displays broad, fleshy round green leaves. Once submerged inside your aquarium, the plant undergoes a stunning transformation: its new underwater leaves emerge narrow, thin, and needle-like. Depending on your aquarium setup, these submerged stems blend into a kaleidoscopic gradient of gold, peach, orange, and fiery red.
Robust Biological Filter and Low-Maintenance Bushing
Highly resilient and fast-growing, the Dwarf Rotala is exceptionally self-sufficient, serving as an outstanding natural filter for balanced tank ecosystems:
Outstanding Nutrient Sponge: Its rapid metabolism allows it to quickly absorb excess nitrates and phosphates from the water column, preventing algae blooms.
- Responds Beautifully to Trimming: Highly adapted to regular pruning. Snipping the tops forces the plant to send out multiple side shoots, forming a thick, dense hedge.
- Effortless Propagation: Simply cut off any healthy stem top and push it directly into your aquarium substrate to instantly form a brand-new plant cluster.
- Botanical Pedigree: Authentic Rotala rotundifolia (Blume) Koehne species.
- Dynamic Form Transition: Shifts cleanly from sturdy, round emersed leaves into fine, needle-like submerged aquatic plumes.
- Kaledoscopic Sunset Palette: Capable of shifting from bright green to deep orange, pink, and intense crimson red.
- Vigorous Back-Stem Growth: Rapid development rate optimized to form dense, lush backdrops via frequent trimmings.
- Natural Algae Shield: Actively drapes tank matrices, starving unwanted algae by absorbing dissolved organic column wastes.
- Lighting Requirements: Highly versatile. Will grow reliably green-to-yellow under medium indirect light. However, to unlock its iconic fiery orange and deep red pigmentation, high-intensity aquarium lighting is critical.
- Watering & Co2 Strategy: Perfectly suited for fully submersed aquarium habitats. While it thrives successfully in low-tech tanks without added carbon dioxide, adding supplemental CO2 injection and iron-rich liquid fertilizers will maximize its leaf width, color saturation, and growth speed.
- Substrate & Planting: Unpot the plant and gently rinse away any mineral wool wrapping from the roots. Divide the stems into small clusters of 2–3 stalks and insert them gently into a nutrient-rich aquarium soil matrix or fine gravel bed using aquascaping tweezers.
- Temperature & Water Parameters: Flawlessly acclimated to typical local warm climates, performing best between 20°C and 28°C. Prefers a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and soft-to-medium water hardness.
